The Oakwood Gallery was founded in 1999 by husband
and wife team David & Ausma Binch. Although only opening a gallery
in 1999 David & Ausma's interest in pottery and potters now
goes back over fifty years.
The gallery was situated in the picturesque North Nottinghamshire
village of Edwinstowe. From the very beginning the gallery exhibited
mainly work by a group of potters that were making pottery in or
after the Oriental tradition of stoneware. The ethos of the gallery
was firmly founded in the Leach Tradition. Some of the potters whose
work was shown were Richard Batterham, John Leach, Phil Rogers,
Mike Dodd, Jim Malone and Edward Hughes to name but a few.
David Binch is an authority on the works of Bernard Leach and Shoji
Hamada, and has been a member of the advisory group of the Leach
Pottery Restoration Project.
