John
Maltby exhibitions at Rufford are always eagerly awaited events
and this 2009 exhibition was no exception. There were over 140 pieces
exhibited in the wonderful space. A space large and generous by normal
gallery standards and which can be a daunting prospect for many artists
and potters. But not for John, his works always superb seem in the
Rufford space to crackle with added energy. His range and creativity
when confronted with 140 pieces is breath taking. Where lesser makers
risk, when asked to exhibit in a single exhibition so many pieces
reveal their modest repertoire, John excels, his canon is pure Englishness,
the sea, landscape, angels, kings and mythical animals. There is life
and light,, but there is also darkness, a raven, dark and menacing,
long regarded as a bird of ill omen, figures with scull like heads.
Yes there is much to see, to read and to enjoy in John Maltby's work.
Just Sublime. |
